Hi Susan,

My comeback line is
"No I'm teaching my baby that they are lovable and to trust which will help
them to develop healthy relationships in the long term." Actually, parents
that I've spoken to seem to really gel with the idea that in caring for
their child they are teaching them something valuable.

This is something that I am very passionate about as someone who is the
mother of a child who lived in an institution for 3 years and as a
researcher who speaks to many families with children with similar histories.
Not responding to babies hurts them. Responding to them helps them to grow
emotionally and physically healthy. For anyone interested in the science
(and politics) behind this I recommend Robert Karen's Becoming Attached.

Looking forward to talking about this to some early childhood nurses in
little while, there's a few of them that need to hear this!
