I call it "flip and tip" ;-) I describe it pretty much the way Theresa and
Winnie did, demo the "flip up toward the nose" and "tipping" the nipple
in....I've been seeing some very nice, chin in deep latches lately. Last night I saw a
mom six hours post c/s who took a class at another site to fit her schedule.
She said that my technique was easier and baby got a better latch - she could
FEEL it. And this was only the third time at breast. Rebecca Glover's work,
Jack and Theresa's and all the "new" latching info has been so helpful. But just
so we don't think we've been "wrong" all these years, let me share this. I
helped Kittie Frantz at the Geddes Production display at the LLLI Conference
this summer and she was concerned about the new latching info and how her
materials fit LC's teaching needs. I pointed out to her that she really was on target
all these years - just look at the latch drawings on her posters and flip
charts. (I've been carrying one in my pocket for years now.) The drawings and the
videos DO show the nipple tilting up at intitial latch and the chin in
slightly deeper than the baby's nose when at breast. Many of the diagrams we've been
using all these years are fairly accurate, and if we can explain the
technique to make it fit the situation, learners will "get it."
