Hi Kate,

We do have a slightly higher Natural Childbirth Rate at my hospital... but the marketing of epidurals is some of the fiercest in the industry. Almost as bad as the marketing of formula! When you are working as a Childbirth Educator in a hospital you come to realize this. So, while most Cincinnati hospitals have a 99% epidural rate, ours tend to be in the low 90s (last I looked.)

I would be willing to do some chart reviews to get actual #'s if you think this would benefit us as LCs. My concern is, once the anesthesia department gets wind of what I am doing they may deliberately undermine it. and it could work against the BFHI in other places.

Subject: comfort and a BFHI question

I just read Susan's email on talking to moms about
breastfeeding *before* they show up at her BF hospital
and that brought a question to mind- ARe there
differences in epidural and surgical birth rates
between Baby Friendly hospitals and other hospitals?
Common sense tells me that the rates would be lower at
Baby Friendly hospitals, but I fear that might not be
so.
