Hello, Cindi.
As others have posted, a baby who can gain weight well in spite of
mashing mom's nipples is very often dealing with an overactive letdown. However,
I would suggest trying the various remedies for that situation alone, before
trying to reduce mom's supply, unless mom reports that she can still feel milk
in the breast when baby has had enough. It is quite possible to have an
overactive letdown that is difficult for baby to handle, and yet have exactly and
only the amount of milk that baby needs--in other words, no oversupply. If
you try techniques for damping supply (such as long stretches of using only one
breast) when mom does not report having more milk than she needs, you run the
risk of having her supply drop below baby's needs, which will lead to other
difficulties.
