I went looking for reasons and came across this information in
"Breastfeeding A Guide for the Medical Profession" 5th edition....."not all
premature infants fed human milk develop rickets, which occurs infrequently
in infants greater than 1500 g.  The VLBW infant does need supplementation,
and cases of rickets are well documented in the literature for this
group.[Am J Med 91 (suppl 6A):71S, 1991]   ... "

I know this isn't a lot of information, but it is a start...  posssibly if
you could ask mom some more questions, (birth wt, what information did she
base her decision upon, etc...), possibly do a journal search, that could
give you some more information...
