I am exhausted just reading your post!
I am hospital based LC and do nothing but LC related stuff daily. We have 2
LC's on the unit Monday through Friday from 6:30am to 3pm. We have one LC
here 6:30a-3pm on Saturday and Sunday. We deliver approximately 350 babies
per month and have a breastfeeding initiation rate of 76-78%.
Here are some recent statistics from my department.
In June of 2003:
Total Breastfeeding Babies-225
Breastfeeding rate-78%
Inpatients-500 (number we saw on unit)
Outpatient visits-14
Breastfeeding Rentals-34
Breastfeeding Sales-2

In April of 2003:
Breastfeeding Babies-260
Breastfeeding Rate-78%
Inpatients-563
Outpatients-21
Breastpump Rental-43
Breastpump Sales-2

We see all moms breastfeeding for the first time at least once during their
hospital stay and more often if needed. We also see any one else having
difficulty or risk factors for lactation failure.
Our NICU babies go to the Children's Hospital next door and they have their
own LC but we see the moms daily until discharge. We do 15-20 OPV per
month and rent breast pumps too.
We facilitate 3 support groups per week off site. Another evening support
group once a month and a daddy support group one evening per month. In
addition to that we do all staff education and updates and are responsible
for the curriculum for the prenatal breastfeeding class. Eight times a
year we do a Breastfeeding Lunch and Learn session for 2 local business
with their employees (off site of course) and also give a 2 hour talk 6-7
times yearly to nurses who come in for an OB education seminar.
Good luck, I hope this helps!
