I work full time as an IBCLC. I am also a RN. I am constantly taking deep
breaths and counting to 10. Sometimes I don't and start talking first and
have to try to calm my disbelief before I say too much. It just never ceases
to amaze us that Physicians can be so ill informed, not care to be informed,
have unsupportive staff, while other staff is so supportive, etc. When a
baby, who is 4 days old, with a bili of 14 is readmitted and the mom is told
NOT to breastfeed. I want to scream. First I look at the AAP/Neonatology
guides for jaundice and I really want to scream. Why are the Physicians not
looking at these? I am surprised the insurance pays for readmits in this
situation. Actually the last baby like that was a self pay. So it is VERY
frustrating on a daily basis. BUT, usually, there is something good that
happens daily that keeps most of us going. A Doctor actually watched me use
a 30ml syringe and a 5 Fr feeding tube at the breast to get a baby to have a
nutritive suckle. This baby had only been pacifying at the breast. He was
so amazed! He went on and on about how up to date we are and how impressed
he is that we make a difference with so many moms. I have so many moms who
state we were the reason she succeeded with nursing, the support groups kept
her going, etc. So for every brick wall, a little part will crumble here and
there and we know we make a little difference. Maybe not as quickly as we
would like but we do make a difference.
