Could the doctor just make a 'referral' instead of an order? It seems if the
doctor asks that the client be seen that is not the same as an order for a
treatment or medication. Don't know the legalities of that and its impact on
3rd party payment if that is a factor.
Re the role of the bf educator: I don't think this person should be seeing
consults, but could be teaching the basics, supporting, and e.g. starting a
mom expressing for a premie if the LC wasn't there. I realize this may be
sabotaging the role of the ibclc, maybe the hospital would decide to 'let
go' the ibclc and hire an educator. So there is this to consider. and in an
ideal world there would be an ibclc each day. But if there is an ibclc
shortage, like a shortage of RNs where nursing assistants help out?? This is
a tricky situation to sort out.
