Some of you may recall my alert about the Sleep Foundation's section on
babies and sleep, which makes no mention of any infant feeding method and
includes recommendations that are not breastfeeding friendly. The Sleep
Foundation is very good at getting a lot of media attention for their
various campaigns - they're the ones who raise awareness about daylight
savings time sleep problems, and teens needing to sleep in the morning (my
teenaged son tried this argument many times when he was late for his morning
math class!) I find this organization to be quite savvy when it comes to
placing their messages in the US media.

Their March 05 newsletter mentions a Pediatrics article showing a higher
rate of SIDS among African American infants and the suggestion that
co-sleeping is a factor (note the URL below doesn't appear to be permanent).

An abstract of the Pediatrics article is here:

Thanks to Nancy Wight for bringing to my attention the The Academy of
Breastfeeding Medicine protocol "Number 6 -- Guideline on Co-Sleeping and
Breastfeeding." I passed that on to my contact at the sleep foundation for
possible inclusion in their web site resources section.
