I work in a telephone triage department, and tonight I got a
breastfeeding question about smallpox. I spent some time researching
it, and found a number of answers to other questions she had, but not
this one. The father of the baby is in the service and must have the
smallpox vaccination. He has no choice according to the grandmother,
his mother. The baby is 4 mos and sleeps in bed with them. Because it
is communicable through touch and indirect touch with things such as
dressings (if there is one), how safe is this for the unvaccinated Mom
and baby? All we know is that the site may be contagious until the scab
falls off, which is 3 weeks. Will a dressing make it safe for them?
Thanks for any answers. I suggested she contact LLLI Medical Advisors
because I felt they would have the breastfeeding concern that others
might not.
