We are attempting to put into public health clinics around the state lactation
rooms equipped with electric breastpumps. Does anyone know of a way to secure
the pumps so that it will be harder (never impossible) to steal? We have them
on stands. I went to the local Lowes & bought some 3/16" metal cable and made
loops with ferrules, disassembled the pumps and slid one loop around the pole
on the base, and put the thing back together. My thought was to install a
screw eye or toggle into the wall and lock the other loop of the 8' cable to
it with a padlock. Not real fancy, but I thought it was a decent plan. Boy,
have I gotten ridiculed! They want something "storebought." I tried a
bicycle lock of the same design, but the loop was not large enough to encircle
the 1 & 1/2 inch pole. The pump will need to have some mobility to it, and an
8' cable allowed it to be moved nicely around the room. Someone suggested
buying chain--now that has a nice inmate quality to it, doesn't it? Nothing
like a nice metal change clanking along the floor. . . Medela has no
suggestions other than using the stand so it is harder to stuff into a
backpack. Does anyone have any ideas? I've searched our office supply
catalogues, but all they have is cable locks for desk computers that come with
security ports on them. My supervisor actually sounded like she was more
willing to spend $1,300 to replace a stolen pump than to spend $10 to secure
the ones we have. Homemade isn't good enough; we need something "retail."
