I'd also be interested in this study. In my NICU as well as in many
others, we do car seat testing prior to sending preemies home. This
involves placing the baby in the seat and monitoring heart and
respiratory rates and oxygen status with a pulse oximeter. Some of the
babies are in the seat for up to 3 hours. (NOTE: we do NOT advocate
keeping babies in seats that long! Some of our families live that far
from the hospital, and if the baby is asleep in the seat, may drive that
long without stopping. We must be sure the baby can tolerate it.) We do
not see a drop in oxygen saturations in the car seats after half an
hour, except in rare babies who have breathing issues, such as chronic
lung disease or exceptionally poor muscle tone.
