I got a call today from a client I saw about 3 months ago for sore nipples.
All is well she tells me, except she was wondering if she should stop
breastfeeding. the doctor told her that her baby has breastfeeding
jaundice and she can give formula if she wants while it clears up!!. She
couldn't remember what the level of bilirubin was; either .11 or 11.

Regardless, this concerns me that this is a new diagnosis in a 3 month old.
Teh pediatrician didnt order any follow up testing, just to come back at 4
months for a check up. My concern is that there is a biliary problem or
something funky, as mom reports she had never noticed she looked yellow
before. Has anyone ever heard of such a late case of onset for
Breastfeeding jaundice? How, if at all, should I approach the doctor to get
more information? or am I just being a nervous Nellie?

thanks in advance:)
