I also agree with Nikki. Breastfeeding offers so much more than just
nutrition and I try to get this across to the parents.
I started to talk to the parents about how when guest come to a home they do
not want to leave the kitchen. Maybe it is the warmth, wonderful smells or
because one knows this is where the good food is. The parents smile and
agree with me. Then I tell them that this tradition starts with the baby.
They know that the breast offers food, warmth, wonderful smells, sounds and
security. I tell the dads that holding their baby, especially skin-to-skin
can offer some of these same things, but it is not the kitchen.
This all comes back to the post on if the newborn is starving. I do believe
that the majority of newborns are not hungry but do want the breast for all
theses other reasons.
Maybe I was in my kitchen on the last post when I got off my soup box instead
of my soap box!
