Pat, this is a typical nursing strike....I'd rule out illness in the baby,
and then have the mother attend to the open wound in whatever way her MD
wants her to, and keeping pumping frequently.  She should try to breastfeed
*gently*, often, and eventually, the baby will take the breast in most
cases.  The mother and baby I worked with recently found that it all worked
out...the baby had had a virus with sores in his throat.....unbeknownst to
the mother. Took over a week to get over it...but breastfeeding resumed.
Kathleen PS She might try over the counter pain relievers in the baby if
there is some pain involved...maybe teething?  She could also try
breastmilk popsicles....
