The talk about pacifier shapes, along with a visit from a friend has
made me think of something; I was wondering what others think of this.

This friend, whose son is now about 6 mos old, is nursing, but they
started solids at 4 months and he had a paci already when i saw him
around 20 days of age the first time. :-(

The friend says he makes a good distinction between wanting the paci and
wanting to nurse...if she tries to offer him the paci when he is hungry
he won't accept it, and sometimes when he's done nursing, he fusses and
wants the paci.

I am wondering how healthy this can be, to *dissociate* comfort sucking
and nutritional sucking at such a young age...I was always of the
impression that because bf can give comfort, even if it still gives
food, that this must be normal, and doing otherwise could have
consequences...but what would those consequences be? Not realizing
later in life when one wants to eat or "comfort eat" and overeating?

Just pondering over this idea...
