when the photo employee at kmart asked me to stop nursing my then 5
month old baby a few years ago, i was not pleased. the photo place was
a tenant but i didn't care. i addressed both companies. photos come in
envelopes with kmarts name all over them, so i made sure kmart knew that
i considered them responsible as well. i did not have to go to an
attorney, the results were quick. i received a letter of apology from
both companies and both companies implemented (or said they did)
education programs in california which addressed the breastfeeding laws
of california. they also sent my copies of the poster they would put in
the employee break room which stated the laws and kmart's policy in
supporting breastfeeding women. i also received a small monitary
compensation, which to me was secondary but i also accepted it, from
both companies. they knew i could have hired an attorney and received a
lot more money--but that was not my goal. they did ask me what my goal
was, and i said to make sure their employees were educated in the law
and that no woman was told to go feed a baby in the bathroom again. i
got that. oh and the photo employee was fired, but that was because he
was more than rude to me and not just about breastfeeding but in
general. he had been warned before, this was the final straw.
