Dear Lactnetters,
I have been working with the mom for several weeks and don't know what else
to try, so I'm asking for your feedback. Mom is nursing an 11month old who
still feeds about every 3 hours at night and 1 or 2 times per day. About
6-7 weeks ago she developed what I thought was a plugged duct which has
moved down to right behind the nipple. It is swollen, hard when palpated,
and extremely tender and sore. Sometimes there is a white spot on the
nipple (like a bleb) and mom tried to lance it with a needle to no avail.
She has also been soaking the breast and using warm compresses before
pumping trying to pull out the plug. She usually uses a PNS, came in and
used a Classic once, but didn't have any better luck with that. After a few
weeks of pumping and soaking I began to think that maybe it was a cyst or
something else. Today she went to the Breast Center - outpatient service
that focuses on breast cancer. They did a sonogram and/or mammogram and
could find nothing wrong inside. They told her the breast was fine Their
solution was of course to wean - after all the baby is almost a year old. I
don't know where to go from here. Has anyone had a plug that took this long
to resolve. Anyother suggestions for getting it out??
Peg Merrill, IBCLC
