Winnie said "I mention that a baby only gets 1-10 ccs the first
feeds."
I have heard/seen written that babies get about 7-14 cc total the first day.
I know this must be highly variable but I think often babies get alot more.
First, I have seen moms express/pump (e.g. for a premie) 15cc, 20cc, and
even 30cc the first time. I don't think pumping always equates with supply
because if mom has a letdown(s) she will get more.
What I like to show moms is if they just try to express a few 'strokes' milk
may not come (colostrum) but if they do it one or two whole minutes, large
drops start to come. I tell the moms that the milk is there, deep within the
breast, and will be 'released' (this word I like) to the baby with proper
position/latch/suckling. I do explain that I don't think babies were meant
to get very large volumes of milk at first, as this can cause problems. I
say that the thicker colostrum and smaller volumes, gradually increasing
over first few days, is the perfect scenario for baby to gradually learn to
coordinate suck/swallow/breathe with larger amounts. I remind them babies
were sucking and swallowing in utero but not 'breathing' per se.
