When talking with docs about feeding on schedules,
a combination of research and common sense seems in
order.
When I discuss feeding in my childbirth classes, the
issue of schedules often comes up. If it doesn't I bring
it up. I usually bring up 2 points:
1. I ask the class when was the last time any of them ate
three meals in a day with nothing in between? Stomachs just
aren't designed that way, also the question usually gets
a laugh and humor is a great way to get people's attention
and I think they remember the info better too.
2. I have 4 kids from 6 to 17. Having adolescents is great
when talking about babies. My teenagers don't go for more than
2-3 hours without eating! What can we expect from infants?
when the issue of feeding comes up among friends my husband
loves to tell the story of his experience in a kibbutz when
he was 12-13 years old. Eating schedule looked like this:
7 am breakfast
10 am morning snack
12 or so lunch
3-4 pm afternooon snack
6 dinner
8-9 evening snack
11-12 pm the kids would sneak into the dining hall for a
midnight snack to hold them over till the morning.
Sometimes I tell this story in may classes as well to drive home
the point about our need to eat "early and often"
Usually the men get the point on that one, I guess either because
they have bigger appetites or because culturally, they are allowed
to indulge their appetites more than women. I find it a good thing
that the men relate to this, then they are looser about putting
babies on a schedule.
Just some suggestions,
Naomi Bar-Yam
