Is someone on this list familiar with the SIDS research
literature who could perhaps enlighten us, or at least give
us some good current references so those of us with less
expertise can educate ourselves?

It is my understanding that SIDS is defined as the sudden
death of an infant under 1 year of age, usually in their
sleep, with no known cause.
This means several things:
1. If they find a cause it's not SIDS it's whatever the
cause was. Some doctors are better at figuring out the
cause than others, which would explaing why some areas
have more SIDS cases than others.

2. If there is no known cause then whatever we say people
should do to prevent it is, at best, a guess in terms
of what is causing, or might prevent, these tragic deaths.

3. Susan is right that putting babies to sleep on their backs
in their own beds with firm mattresses, spread eagle is
not going to be conducive to sleep for most babies. Then we
get into the whole area of sleep "problems." (not to mention
flat heads that require reshaping because babies sleep in
the same position all the time.

How can we take the research that we have, evaluate the quality
of it and then sprinkle in a generous dose of common sense?
