I have worked in SCN/ICN for over 14yrs and we have never sent babies home
with HMF

We stop HMF when babies reach the 2kg + mark. One of the unit's clinical
indicators is to get 80% of our discharges breastfeeding hopefully fully but
otherwise what we call partially breastfeeding .The partially breastfeeding
are being supplemented with normal formula(generally the multiples come into
this group).

The most recent follow up shows that we are meeting this indicator quite
well an improve when compared to the last 2 yrs

We also get a lot of 23+wkers through our unit in Brisbane QLD
Australia. There are only 2 level111 units in Brisbane ,we are the largest
one.

We start our babies at the breast generally from 30-32 wks but also
encourage kangaroo cuddling from an earlier age with breast nuzzling. We do
allow for individual baby signs/indicators as to when they are ready to suck
at the breast. Some babies will go to the breast earlier then others and this
is allowed for when making decisions about starting babies at the breast.
