I am currently nursing my 4mo, and he has recently started sticking his
finger in his mouth sometimes when he nurses.  Right now he is wanting his
fingers or SOMETHING in his mouth a lot of the time...I think he's working
on some teeth or something.  It breaks the seal, so I try to keep him from
doing it.  I simply hold his little hand in mine.  Sometimes he is
persistent and will keep putting his finger back in, but I just gently pull
it out and hold his little hand some more.  (I have never tried a toy, but
knowing him, he'd end up unlatching and putting the toy in his mouth!)  For
HIM I don't think it's anything more than the normal desire to put stuff in
his mouth that is involved with teething or this developmental stage.
