First I repeat to them the signs of a well hydrated, well fed baby.
Wet/poopy diapers, happy 'drunk' looking baby at end of feed (unable to
handle ANY heavy equipment). Not crying inconsolably during the first week,
weight gain etc. Then I tell them, "I have never met anybody who ended up
in therapy because they were breastfed/held/loved too much." People seem to
like that one. I also try to encourage them to listen to THEIR hearts and
THEIR babies because they probably know what is best. If they meet with lots
of resistance I suggest they search out like-minded people and/or a good
breastfeeding support group. I remind them their mothers followed their
doctors advice, which was to formula feed and now they are doing what the AAP
recommends. And, I am sure THEIR mothers would have breastfed them had their
dr.s told them it was the best. I talk about how parents want the best life
has to offer for their kids, breastfeeding is the best food for a healthy
start. I could go on and on with my reasons to breastfeed! Hope this helps!
