First, thanks to all who shared information with me. It was a big help.

The meeting went well, I think. Nothing earth-shaking to report. This
woman wants simply to maintain her milk supply until such time as she can
breastfeed her baby. That is what she wants today; if recovery is drawn
out, she thinks she may stop pumping, but she doesn't know. It is too early
to say.

In this case, symptoms began pretty suddenly, coinciding with her milk
'coming in'. The same thing happened when her first child was born. For
that reason, there is some trepidation from family and from HCPs about
increasing pumping, if increased prolactin and/or oxytocin have contributed
to her illness. So we have to wait and see how it goes. She recovered
fully the first time, and is progressing well with treatment now.

I admit it concerns me to hear that her symptoms were characterized by a
desire to care for everyone and anyone except herself and her baby, in all
possible ways. She was concerned about the physical, spiritual and
emotional well-being of other mothers on the ward, of staff, and of visitors
to the ward. She herself summed it up this way: 'I just get too ecstatic
after giving birth, and I can't stop.' If she is hypersensitive to
oxytocin, or prolactin, might it not manifest itself as inappropriately
directed caring behavior?

I'll be keeping my fingers crossed that it works out, and if I can post any
more, I will.

Rachel Myr
