The levels describe how complicated the baby care is.  Level one being for
normal newborns - no problems or minor problems.  NICU being for the most
seriously ill or premature babies.  The nursery nurses at each level have to
be certified for baby care at their nurseries level.  If a hospital only has
a level 1 or II nursery, then a sick baby is transferred to a hospital with
a more sophisticated /higher level of care.  Many hospitals that are truly
committed to "rooming-in" or Family Centered Maternity Care have all but
eliminated nurseries (unfortunately not where I live :-(  Sincerely, Pat in
