mothers would

five minutes on each side a couple of times rather than double pumping for 10
to 15 minutes???
I thought studies years ago showed that mothers obtained more milk from
double pumping rather than single pumping. Or was it just that it increased
prolactin production? We know double pumping saves time, but does it
decrease the amount the mom gets?>

Please remember i am really only talking about low supply - not a normal
supply.

No, double pumping would be the equivalent of feeding the twins - do them
together or pump together to empty both breasts as quickly as possible -
then leave them for a bit to let the milk synthesis kick in at the fastest
pace it can in both breasts. If the mother were single pumping then yes,
switch pumping would work better for her then staying on one breast for an
extended time (after the flow had significantly slowed) before going to the
other.

I doff my cap to Cathy Fetherston re the prolactin - but I think we are
saying the same thing, she just explains it better. :-) Re the stage of
lactation, seeing I am talking low supply I'm presuming that it is well
after Lact II.
