I had a puzzling phone call tonight, and I'm hoping that someone among the
wise women has information for me. A mother called, saying that on Friday
(today is Monday) she woke up feeling quite engorged on her right breast
(slightly on the left as well), and although she put her son to the breast
right away (he's almost one year old), her breast continued to feel overly
full. She also describes quite intense pain in and around the nipple area,
like "being stabbed" if she brushes against anything accidentally, and pain
during nursing, which seems to stay localized. She says that there is no
noticable blockage of a nipple pore, and no particular sore spot anywhere
on her breast. In addition, she can't get any milk out with her pump,
which works fine on the left side. No redness, no cracks. Doesn't quite
fit the bill for either thrush or mastitis. I've suggested ibuprofen, for
something to do in the meantime, and soaking of breast in warm water,
mostly because I couldn't think of anything else. I also suggested she see
her doctor. Any ideas? Suggestions for this woman? - she sounds like
she's in a lot of pain.

Thanks,
Ingrid
