You make some excellent points about the potential for the tea-cup hold to
be used very aggressively. Yes, I frequently hear complaints from mothers
that someone in the hospital "grabbed" her breast and "shoved" it in the
baby's mouth. Usually the mother finds that this hurts, and she always
feels very resentful about the whole experience. Now - how to explain that
this has to be gently done, without shoving, forcing, grabbing, ramming,
slamming? Nor can you expect to lift a whole breast by the areola without
causing great pain! It should be an invitation, a facilitating - with grace
and sensitivity and finesse. I often think of latching as being like a
dance, a moving and a response. Being rough is completely indefensible when
it comes to helping mothers latch babies. You are quite right!
