this sounds like a common example of where one educated health professional
informs a mother with evidence based research to try and help her make a
decision. the mother appreciates the care the advise but is too afraid to
take act on the information for unknown underlying reasons. some of the
reasons seem to be that other health professionals dealing with the parents
make adamant contradictory statements that seem to over power logic, reason
and research based evidence. It this very hard dealing with these situations
and sometimes we have to walk away saying well I have given info but it is
up to them which info they choose to accept believe and act on.

I have known others to find the research and confront the certain health
professionals or leave the literature around the work place. Still others
work on informing the parent about these matters at times when they are able
to cope with high quality information so that parents become advocates for
themselves.

which ever way it goes it is slow tedious process and change and acceptance
is not always palpable. It is worth keeping on keeping on just for the few
who act on helpful information for optimal health outcome for baby. I am
raving on about the concepts of care without answering the question. this
topic is dear to my heart.

any way yes I am sure there is research along the lines of your question
but would have to find it precisely maybe someone else has it at their
fingertips. I feel so angry when others make these convincing statements
to parents without evidence and parents it seems are almost bullied and are
left feeling inadequate and having no control over any part of the care
decisions. Yet they will be taking the baby home to care for it full time
for the rest of growing up life.
