1) The medication you're referring to is called Celexa and it is a fairly new
medication used to treat postpartum depression. According to Dr. Hale, it is
considered an L3 for neonates and L2 for older babies.
2) In response to your statement that mom hasn't felt much improvement with
the use of this medication, I'd recommend that she continue taking it longer
as these meds. usually take at least 3-4 weeks to notice relief in symptoms
of depression.
3) In response to the biting and the low milk supply....the biting has
nothing to do with the use of Celexa, but to the low supply, and the low
milk volume is probably related to the use of the Pump-In-Style.
We have shared the experience amongst us in the past that many of us have not
been able to effectively increase milk volumes with the use of this pump. In
fact, some of us, including myself, have actually temporarily provided a
hospital-grade rental pump to a mother who is pumping with a Pump-In-Style so
as to re-gain her milk volume. I also counsel mothers about these issues. I
currently have a rental pump out to a mother who had been using a
Pump-In-Style and hadn't had the baby successfully latched onto the breast,
so her volumes were low. We used Reglan, latching baby onto breast, and
pumping with a Lactina and were successfully able to regain her volumes
within a week. By the way, if I've provided the purchase of the pump, and
her volumes lower, then I loan her a rental pump because I feel responsible
(only happened once). I inform mothers about the possible impact on milk
volumes whenever a purchase takes place. If a mother made her purchase
elsewhere prior to my contact, then I do not take responsbility (as in the
mother I've stated above), and I do rent the pump to her.
Hope this helps!
