I live in Manhattan, where I also do home visits as an LC. I thought you
might want a small picture of my visits on the week of the events. I went to
visit a woman on Thursday who lived in Greenwich Village. I had a very
smooth subway ride, which pleased me more than any subway ride of my life. A
woman on the train wore really high, really fashionable and incredibly
impractical shoes on the train and it just tickled me, because it meant that
she had faith that she was not going to have to walk. Or run for her life.
The mother I visited was very distraught. No one let her see what had
happened; I assume they told her. The windows were closed, but at a certain
point one was opened and the smell came in (it all depends on the wind). The
baby was a fine nurser. There was evidence of milk (to me); but not to the
mother. She was strangely disconnected, although her behavior with the baby
was not the least bit odd; she took very good care of him. She was weighing
him every day, and she realized that the doctor was doing this just for her
(the doctor lived in her building). I gave her a starter SNS and some
pumping plans, but she said later the only thing she was going to do was the
pump; she called to repeat the name of Rescue Remedy. I believe her letdown
was inhibited. It was a strange, unreal visit. My other visit was much more
"normal" in feeling but the couple were extraordinary people, acquainted
with people I knew and living around the corner from me (in Manhattan this
doesn't mean you see the person, or will see them in the future, but it does
increase the chances that your circles intersect). In fact the father knew
an LC in our area who had a tragic history. That mother continued
breastfeeding and I think will do fine.
Perhaps some stories from Oklahoma City would help me. How long will we all
be stressed out? Is that even the proper term?
