Pat Gima said: "THe longer the induction meds are administrated the more
edemic mom and baby will be. A breastfed infant who urinates 3-4 times on
day one and two is not operating within the norm. Once again measuring
(scale weight) is being misinterpreted and unhealthy practices being
implemented."

Could this have any relationship to hypoglycemia risk? I'm thinking of the
babies who are so bloated, or swollen from birth trauma, that his mouth and
eyes seem buried in his cheeks. At the same time, they seem either
uninterested in feeding or unable to feed. They're either very sleepy or
very confused.

I had one like that this week. He had been checked: sugar level was 44, RN
was concerned about this low level. I saw baby shivering and rooting on his
blanket as I took him out to mom & helped them latch. But once latched, he
seemed to shut down & go to sleep. Helped mom to stroke his jaw, palms,
etc, to encourage suckling when he paused for an unusually long time. I
left when she said she could handle this. He was her 3rd child.

Ten minutes later when I went back to check, mom was sitting up in bed
eating her dinner & gramma was holding baby. He was still rooting. Since
mom wasn't going to breastfeed - baby had to eat. Gramma was delighted to
be able feed ABM to baby. RN was happy that baby's sugar count would go up
& she wouldn't have to send him to Level II or III. Mom was happy because
she didn't have to delay her dinner to keep urging baby to breastfeed.

Maybe tomorrow....
