Tell them it is not 'paid by them'. What happens is the state gives a loan to the child and when it pays tax the cash is repaid [with interest if my tax bill is anything to go by!!] - point out that they had the same breaks and not to be such pathetic whingers [as you can imagine such graceful rhetoric wins 'em over every time! [you could of course say the same thing in a more aureate fashion....]

For the future n.b. I use 'it' to refer to kids as not being sexist enough to call all 'he' and too darned lazy to type 'he/she' every time!
