Please Jo-Anne do not patronise me. I am perfectly cognisant of the
potential risks with formula feeds. The point which you are refusing to
acknowledge is that the risks are infinitesimal.
I accept that children who are breastfeed are less likely to e.g. suffer
from asthma or eczema [my own breastfed children suffer from these
ailments!]. However, and this is the critical point, most children will be
unaffected. The difference with e.g. tobacco is that it is possible to scan
and see peripheral vasoconstriction with each and every cigarette. The fact
is that tobacco, certain recreational drugs and excess alcohol are
guaranteed to harm - formula just might in a tiny fraction of cases.
I think that the fact that I am totally committed to breast feeding is being
missed purely because I am willing to be rational rather than stamping my
feet and shouting 'it is best because I say it is!'
If I wished to be really annoying I might start to carp on for the need for
formula for those children who are damaged by breast milk [or standard
formula] as a result of certain rare inborn errors of metabolism.
Perhaps the best tool for persuading parents [and HCPs] that I have found is
the UNICEF sheet on the benefits of BF - the research base is concise and
indicates the superiority of a substance with benefits.
