I agree with Jennifer's comments about the environment  of the hospital
intimidating even the strongest mothers.  In a previous professional life I
was a family care coordinator of a large NICU.  I remember very well one
mother telling me "I have to do what they tell me to so they will like me.
If they like me then they will take better care of my baby when I am not
here".  It broke my heart, but she was absolutely correct.  I think to some
extent this is what the "normal" full term mom's are doing when their baby
is away from them at night due  to a strong suggestion from the nurse.  They
are trying to be a "good" patient so the nurses will like them and take care
of them.
