We use the Human Milk Bank guidelines for storing milk for our NICU babies.
Paula Meier recently spoke in Boston and stated that in the US (and Canada I
believe) the standard is fresh 48 hours refrigerated, once thawed 24 hours in
the refrigerator. I don't have her references here, but will look tomorrow at
work and see if she cites a reference. For our well babies in the post partum
area, we tell moms that milk is good for 7 days in the fridge. I think the
new guideline is 8 days, but a week is easy for them to remember. Why the
difference? We are just being hypervigilant for these very fragile babies.
