Barb,
First Bravo for your efforts to rid your hospital of gift packs. Marsha Walker's list of suggestions to rid your hospital of dependence on formula companies is excellent! We have used it as a part of our "Just Say No to Formula Company Gifts" Campaign here in New Mexico. What I have found helpful when addressing physicians is not to get into a debate about infants crying all night and what to do etc. That is not the issue. The issue is that health care professionals and institutions should not be an avenue for advertising any! product. So, I ask them, "Why should a health care professional be an avenue for advertising a product? Believe it or not, they have not thought of themselves as being "used" by formula companies. At least it gets them thinking.

Then I would give them a list of "solutions" to what he(they) see as a problem. Lactnetters have given you some great ones: 1. Have the mom take the baby to bed and nurse! 2. Teach staff some of those great analogies about babies needing time to adjust to their new environment etc. so that they can give mothers with some anticipatory guidance. 3. Have your "hotline" go into the hospital nursery(Do some teaching and have clearly written "tree" of things to tell the mothers when they call.) 4. Include some group discussion in prenatal classes that help mother and fathers think ahead about how they will handle this situation.
Good Luck!
