Just got a call from a nurse practioner who just doesn't know where to turn
too next. She has a first time mom with a 9 month old who has been
presenting in her office since Novemember 1st. Mom had a fever than, red
breast with lumps on right breast within 1-3 o'clock margins. She was
given Dicloxicillin for 10 days and felt better. On the 22nd was seen
again, same symptoms but without the fever. MD gave her Keflex which she
tried for 6 days and continued with the pain and lumps. They cultured the
breast and it grew out stuff that could only be treated with "IV meds or
drugs I wouldn't give a nursing mom". The nurse practioner saw her on the
26th again with the same symptoms and is beginning to fear intraductal
carcinoma. Mom is scheduled for a ultrasound today and then seeing a
breast specialist. I did bring up the possibility of intraductal yeast
infection but the nurse practioner wasn't impressed but won't ignore that
possibility. I did tell her that yeast can be one sided. Is there any
other suggestions that you wise ones can come up with? Could it be
resistant yeast - mom now has red nipple on the right side and a crack.
Baby who was never a good nurser is now teething, has a cold and now is
exclusively nursing. Does not resist the right side. Thanks for any
information you can send my way.
On the flip side, with good news. My OB who delivered my 5 month old son
has a three day old who finally latched on to her flat nipples!!!!!
