This is just my thoughts. I think it may be better to stop acting and just
sit down and think about what is happening. If the mom hung up on you, that's
all you can do for her at this point. She is not ready or receptive to any
articles no matter how scientific they are. And if the nurse manager received
a complaint about your actions, she is also not at a teachable moment.
We cannot breastfeed every baby, educate every mother or "win" everyone over
to "our side". What we can and should do (in my not so humble opinion) is to
provide the education and the avenue so that mothers and parents can make
informed decisions. If we alienate the mother and the health care team, it
doesn't help get the baby breastfed. And that mother may go out and tell
everyone in her circle of friends and acquaintances about the "overzealous"
lactation consultant who wouldn't work with the Ped, who got written up, etc
and that just destroys our credibility.
It may be helpful to write the Ped a note on why bfing is not contraindicated
with a baby has jaundice and include some reference information. But be sure
to not be accusing or insulting.
It also helps to find a supportive ear to vent to-but choose carefully
someone who can listen and keep your rants confidential. You want to remain a
part of the team. And then use your energy to help educate HCPs and perhaps
implement some policies.

Barbara Whitehead, IBCLC (who has ranted many times in her career!!!)
