Dear Lactnet,
The cover story in this month's Life Magazine is "Born To Soon/Saving
Jason"....a pictorial and article about premature babies. One photo is
captioned: MILK RUN "Each baby in the intensive care unit has a plastic
container for stored breast milk. Jason (dad) and nurse Maria Wagner stand
by as Laurie labels her latest bottle to go into the freezer"
Page 60 has 4 LONG paragraphs about pumping and meeting with LC Rachelle
Lessen. Excerpted: "As Lessen leaves, she promises to call every day. Her
job requires diplomacy: She needs to emphasize how important the breast milk
is to the baby's growth and fragile immune system, without adding to the
pressure Laurie already faces."
It also includes the following excerpt regarding LCs: "The neonatal
unit is its own world, a culture defined by the common goal of getting the
babies home. Orbits intersect in the hall and at bedside: lactation
consultants, respiratory therapists, developmental specialists, social
workers, nurses, nurses-practitioners, custodians, doctors, fellows,
residents, radiology technicians."
We head the list (quite, literally(!)) of the health team. Kangaroo care
is pictured and discussed as well as the roller coaster ride emotionally for
the parents and family. Worth taking a look at and billed as a Collector's
Edition on the cover.

Do any of you have info or worked with clients with Crohn's? The archive
mainly discusses babies with it or human milk for adults with Crohn's. A mom
in my class wants all the info she can gather. She has had an ileostomy but
is stable and presently takes no meds. TIA
