In reference to Kathy's comments that our society seems to place a higher
emphasis on a fast return to sexual relations between husband and wife:

A friend of mine is writing a book on infant sleep. She has been
interviewing various "experts" on this topic, and has commented to me that
she feels many of the proponents of "crying it out" and "teaching the baby
to sleep alone" are primarily concerned that the baby's waking is disrupting
the sex life of the baby's father. They are opposed to letting the baby
sleep with parents and to going to the baby when it cries not because they
really think it harms the baby but because they feel it reduces the amount
of sexual activity between the couple, and that will therefore harm the
marriage. I thought that was very interesting.
