I was amazed that in her article on cosmetic surgeryJoan Kron thought to ask
how breast reductions or augmentations might affect sensation, but not how
they could affect breasts functioning to make milk! Some women go on to feed
their children just fine on post-surgical breasts, but others will have real
trouble. Many women who still hope to give their future kids the healthiest
start and reduce their own risk of breast cancer by breastfeeding put off
these surgeries for a few years for this very reason. Women who want to take
the chance can still ask their surgeons about incisions that will cut as few
milk ducts as possible, a topic few surgeons raise with patients who don't
think to ask on their own.
