Oh wise ladies of lactnet I call on your expertise!
I have been helping a mom with a twelve day old baby today. Or trying!
I saw them a week ago. Baby wouldn't latch but mom wanted to breastfeed.
Set her up with an SNS to use both at the breast if baby would latch and
on her finger with baby close to breast if baby got fustrated at the
breast. Baby was originally getting her milk in a bottle. Told them not
to use the bottle or pacifiers and to always offer the breast first.
Baby was doing a head bobbing behavior and getting VERY frustrated. Told
mom baby needs to associate breast with food and pleasure. Recommended
just laying near breast, bathing together and licking at the breast as
positive steps toward getting the baby back to breast. Mom seems very
compliant but has had no luck getting the baby to nurse effectively for
any length of time. Now mom is panicked because her very supportive
hubby is going back to work next week and she isn't sure if she can keep
up with the pumping/feeding routine. She is very well educated (science
field I suspect) and wants a simple recipe that will work (dont we all).
Anyone got one? I'm kinda stuck other than suggesting to her that one
day with some maturity...VOILA the baby will latch. HELP!
