I, too, saw the blurb in the Midwifery Today E-news on this, and recognized
it as a more detailed version of something described in the Seattle-King
County publication "Breastfeeding Triage Tool" where it is recommended for
something they call "Decreased confidence about milk supply". The technique
is attributed to Stutte, Bowles and Morman from an article called 'The
effects of breast massage on volume and fat content of human milk',
published in Genesis 10(2)(April/May 1988):22-24.
I have personally observed the increased swallowing which occurs with
massage of this type, and sometimes it is useful in cases where the baby
likes to snack every 30 minutes or so and the mother would prefer the baby
to take more and give her more of a break between meals...certainly not as a
general rule for all mothers to use!
