I have not read the article, but I would doubt the mother deliberately
starved the baby. Her worry about the child protection services was not a
trivial worry, they do go a bit strange sometimes, and in such situations
*all* the children have been taken away. It is not an excuse, just a
reminder that her concern was a real one.

I would urge all those who ask how this could happen to read the article in
JHL by me, June 1996. It happens all the time, and even experienced mothers
don't always see what is happening.
