Denise said,
<< Perhaps they are referring to Dr. Gartner's work (several years back)
referring to jaundice in breastfed babies as a normal state, with
bilirubin having anti-oxidant effects. I believe that it was found in
mice that breast milk enhanced reabsorption of bilirubin, and his
contention was that if 2/3 of breastfed infants have elevated bili's,
then it must be a normal physiologic function instead of a pathologic
function. Sorry to post without the reference. >>
There was a Reuters article that just came out that said exactly (almost) the
same thing -- about bilirubin being an antioxidant -- however, the problem w/
Reuters is that you don't get the citation. This was just within the past
week or so -- I forgot to bookmark it, so I don't know where it is. Anyone
else have either the article or the original? And if anyone has Gartner's
article citation, I'd like to have that too.
Thanks!
Jan
