A post dated 2/18/00 stated " I have Afrin Nasal Spray which is just saline
(no drugs)in my closet at home. It was very cheap."

I am not aware of any Afrin preparation that is just saline. Do not confuse
Afrin with saline. Unfortunately there is a public misconception that over
the counter medicines is safe and Afrin in particular is an example of a
potentially dangerous over the counter drug. The active ingredient is
oxymetazoline hydrochloride, a potent vasal constrictor. The bottle reads "
adults and children over the age of 6, 2-3 sprays per nostril every 10-12
hours. WARNING Do not exceed dosage. Do not use for more than 3 days."

Please do not use Afrin in place of saline, or contact lens solution or
nipple creams. Please read the label carefully before use.

In my own practice I very rarely recommend Afrin because there are other
alternatives.

I welcome any discussion of Afrin on lactnet or private email
as appropriate because "Afrin education" is a considerable part of my
practice.
