<also do Childbirth Ed. and boy is it a struggle to tell women the
truth in these matters. Their OBs get mad about it. They are telling
them "safe, safe, safe" about epidurals.

I guess what I am saying is, this is a much bigger battle than just us
against Fentanyl.>
Susan Keith-Hergert

The New York Times Magazine 11/21/99 ran letters to the editor as did the
paper in response to an editorial in a previous edition by Margaret Talbot
on pain free childbirth. ( I would like to see the original essay if anyone
has it. ) I was moved by some of the responses. One lady wrote "while many
doctors say that epidurals are safe for newborns, I feel that if, for
example, drinking soda ( or caffeine) is not healthy during pregnancy, how
can anesthesia be."
Another letter expressed that she had been so careful and compliant with all
of the precautions offered by her OB no drugs, no caffeine, no alcohol, no
smoking, avoiding second hand smoke only to arrive at the hospital in labor
and the medicine cabinets opened for her.

How true how true. It is also continues post partum. How many times do we
see a NSVD going home with an Rx for 30 (!) Percocets and 30 800mg
Ibprovin. Some think they have to take them all just because they were
prescribed.
