Hi Laurie and Lactnet,

I too would advise against this mom eating nuts. I've sure had a rash (no
pun intended) of babies lately who've manifested symptoms of allergy
(rashes, bloody stools, cramps, colicky behavior) when their moms ate
certain foods, and cleared all their symptoms when moms eliminated the
offending food or food group. And I've seen in these same kids that they do
outgrow the allergies if exposure to the offending food is avoided. The
most extreme case involved a mom whose son went into anaphylaxis after she
ate a bowl of peanuts (he hadn't started solids at the time). The boy was
resuscitated and is a fine healthy preschooler today. His allergist didn't
want to believe in the possibility of such a marked reaction to anything in
the mom's milk, but became a believer after the mom convinced him to test
the kid and he saw just how sensitive the boy was.
At that time this mom begged me to write up her case and publish it,
because the lack of anything in the medical literature had been a real
obstacle in getting his HCPs to look at it as an allergy problem while he
was still exclusively breastfeeding. Yes, I agree, it would be great to
have a pediatric allergist on Lactnet, and considering the scarcity of
literature on this topic, it wd be interesting indeed to see what they would
add to the discussion.

Subject: peanut allergy

Kathy
You posted about a client who <<wondered if there would be a
benefit if she introduced nuts into her diet so that her exclusively
breastfed 5 month-old baby would develop a tolerance to peanuts in a safe
way. Her husband has an allergy to peanuts, not peanut oil.>>

I would advise AGAINST intro of peanut products since the baby could also be
allergic. I don't know if the intro of nuts into mom's diet would actually
de-sensitize the baby. Doesn't sound likely. She could introduce the food
much later in life [after 1 yr or so?] with a very small dose and observe
carefully. By the way, How bad is the Dad's allergy? And can we get a good
pedi allergist on lactnet?
